Keep India Beautiful, in association with CII Young Indians – Delhi Chapter, celebrated a “Gandhi Jayanti Cleanliness Drive” with a special emphasis on plastic recycling and reducing plastic pollution.

This drive was supported by Pom Pom, which converts recyclable plastics back into raw materials to create new products. Using recycled materials instead of raw materials conserves natural resources and energy, as recycled materials have already been refined and processed once. Moreover, plastic takes hundreds of years to break down in a landfill.

One recycled plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. One ton of recycled plastic saves 5,774 kWh of energy, 16.3 barrels of oil, 98 million BTUs of energy, and 30 cubic yards of landfill space. Today’s drive resulted in the collection of more than 20 kilograms of plastic litter, which was handed over to the Pom Pom team. A detailed case study will soon be available, analyzing today’s drive and suggesting measures to reduce plastic use and pollution.
