The financial and emotional difficulties they face are so persistent that they barely have the time or mindset to enjoy one of the biggest festivals in our country – Diwali\, the Festival of Lights. Diwali is supposed to bring joy and happiness to everyone’s life\, but the children living in slums are far removed from this happiness. Abject poverty is the main obstacle to celebrating the festival. These children experience only despair and darkness\, even during festivals like Diwali\, leading to feelings of hatred and desperation towards society. Keep India Beautiful took steps to make a difference by celebrating Diwali with slum children\, distributing sweet gift packs to them. Around 50 kids from the nearby slums of Yamuna Pushta gathered in Railway Colony\, Civil Lines area\, participating and sharing their experiences. This was followed by a motivational talk about hygiene\, keeping our surroundings clean\, and avoiding polluting fireworks. The theme of the drive was community participation\, and members from various RWAs took part. Equipped with biodegradable garbage backpacks and gloves\, they cleaned their surroundings. \nKeep India Beautiful also hosted a “Walking Discussion” for residents to plan the beautification and maintenance of their area\, along with a plantation drive. The event received a tremendous response from people of all walks of life. It was free of charge\, and Keep India Beautiful provided aprons\, recyclable garbage bags\, gloves\, saplings for planting\, and medals for the participating children. Using recycled materials instead of raw materials conserves natural resources and energy\, as recycled materials have already been refined and processed once. Moreover\, plastic takes hundreds of years to break down in a landfill. \nOne recycled plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. One ton of recycled plastic saves 5\,774 kWh of energy\, 16.3 barrels of oil\, 98 million BTUs of energy\, and 30 cubic yards of landfill space. Today’s drive resulted in the collection of more than 20 kilograms of plastic litter\, which was handed over to the Pom Pom team. A detailed case study will soon be available\, analyzing today’s drive and suggesting measures to reduce plastic use and pollution. \nThanks to all the volunteers and members for devoting their time to this urgent cause\, making it so meaningful and successful. It was the first event in the series\, where runners were equipped with biodegradable garbage backpacks and gloves\, cleaning the busy Inner Circle at Connaught Place as they ran. The event was free of charge and open to all\, attracting participants of all ages\, including children\, young adults\, and the elderly.
