Around 200 kilograms of plastic trash were collected and handed over to the recycling agency GreenEcoCare\, which will convert it back into raw materials for creating new products. \nCommunity participation was the theme of this drive against plastic waste. More than 150 volunteers marched carrying biodegradable garbage bags and gloves\, picking up plastic litter from the back side of Rajendra Bhawan\, Rajendra Place. It was heartening to see many shopkeepers and people working in adjoining offices joining our drive and picking up plastic trash from the surroundings. \nThe objective of this drive was to raise awareness about conserving energy and natural resources\, reducing plastic pollution and greenhouse gases\, and not overburdening landfills\, as it takes hundreds of years for plastic to decompose in landfills. \nWe also installed four dustbins for collecting dry and wet trash in the surroundings\, which a recycling agency will collect and recycle on a regular basis. A team of theatre artists from Parikalpna performed an engaging street play on the evils of plastic waste during the event. \nThis was a free event aimed at spreading awareness about the dangers of plastic trash. The theme of this cleanliness drive was community participation\, attracting volunteers from many NGOs\, fitness enthusiasts from across Delhi\, and students from various schools and universities. \nWhat started as a lazy morning at 6 am transformed by 6:45 am as around 1\,500 participants gathered to run for a cause: keeping their surroundings clean because there is no other planet to run to. The morning soon buzzed with positivity and energy reminiscent of a rock concert. \nThe event kicked off with a captivating street play on cleanliness\, which not only raised awareness about the importance of maintaining clean surroundings but also entertained the crowd with humorous sarcasm. Following this\, the “CrossFit Robust” team led an invigorating workout session\, leaving everyone huffing and puffing\, demonstrating why CrossFit is renowned for its intensity. \nNext\, the participants ran laps around the inner circle of Connaught Place\, which was closed to vehicular traffic for the duration of the event. The most crucial part of the event followed: the Cleanliness Drive. Participants donned biodegradable garbage backpacks and gloves\, then set to work cleaning the running path. In no time\, the inner circle area was cleared of trash\, which was collected in garbage bags. The financial and emotional difficulties they face are so persistent that they barely have the time or mindset to enjoy one of the biggest festivals in our country – Diwali\, the Festival of Lights. Diwali is supposed to bring joy and happiness to everyone’s life\, but the children living in slums are far removed from this happiness. Abject poverty is the main obstacle to celebrating the festival. These children experience only despair and darkness\, even during festivals like Diwali\, leading to feelings of hatred and desperation towards society. Keep India Beautiful took steps to make a difference by celebrating Diwali with slum children\, distributing sweet gift packs to them. Around 50 kids from the nearby slums of Yamuna Pushta gathered in Railway Colony\, Civil Lines area\, participating and sharing their experiences. Using recycled materials instead of raw materials conserves natural resources and energy\, as recycled materials have already been refined and processed once. Moreover\, plastic takes hundreds of years to break down in a landfill. \nOne recycled plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. One ton of recycled plastic saves 5\,774 kWh of energy\, 16.3 barrels of oil\, 98 million BTUs of energy\, and 30 cubic yards of landfill space. Today’s drive resulted in the collection of more than 20 kilograms of plastic litter\, which was handed over to the Pom Pom team. A detailed case study will soon be available\, analyzing today’s drive and suggesting measures to reduce plastic use and pollution. \nThanks to all the volunteers and members for devoting their time to this urgent cause\, making it so meaningful and successful.
