For most underprivileged children, enjoying their childhood is a rare luxury, as they are often preoccupied with helping at home or working to support their families from a very young age. The financial and emotional difficulties they face are so persistent that they barely have the time or mindset to enjoy one of the biggest festivals in our country – Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Diwali is supposed to bring joy and happiness to everyone’s life, but the children living in slums are far removed from this happiness. Abject poverty is the main obstacle to celebrating the festival. These children experience only despair and darkness, even during festivals like Diwali, leading to feelings of hatred and desperation towards society. Keep India Beautiful took steps to make a difference by celebrating Diwali with slum children, distributing sweet gift packs to them. Around 50 kids from the nearby slums of Yamuna Pushta gathered in Railway Colony, Civil Lines area, participating and sharing their experiences. This was followed by a motivational talk about hygiene, keeping our surroundings clean, and avoiding polluting fireworks.
